Camaraderie Brings Cheer

Camaraderie Brings Cheer

Thursday nights outing was the first NHL Jerseys game for a number of the Walter Reed patients, including Staff Sgt. Robert Huegel.

It was great! Huegel exclaimed after the Capitals Matt Pettinger

scored the deciding goal in the shootout to win the game. Huegel said although he doesnt yet fully understand all the rules of the game, he enjoyed the action and the camaraderie with his fellow service members.

Huegel said he and the other patients like to joke with each other and make light of their injuries. For instance, he said a Marine corporal who lost two limbs in Iraq, joked at the game that they charge an arm and a leg for food around here.

We bust on each other, Huegel said. Its all in fun, he said, adding that it helps them cheer one another up.

Pepperdine Men’s Tennis Team Free Clinic

Pepperdine Men’s Tennis Team Free Clinic

You know, I asked some of the seniors what they’re going to do, and I remember one girl told me she’s going to be Teach for America. That means being a champ off the field. (Applause.) It means giving back something to society. I appreciate the fact that the Pepperdine Men’s Tennis Team held a free clinic for children in Washington, D.C. just yesterday.

In other words, you can win on the athletic field, and you can win in the classroom, but you can also contribute to our country by helping somebody in need, by using your Sharks Jerseysship status to help heal a broken heart or to help somebody live a better life. And so to the champs, I’m glad you’re here. For those of you who follow presidential politics, you know I’ll be around one more year. I’m looking forward to having you come back. In the meantime, I ask for God’s blessings on you, your family and our country. Thanks for coming. (Applause.)

Basis for Effective Treatment

Basis for Effective Treatment

Scientific research since the mid-1970s shows that treatment can help many people change destructive behaviors, avoid relapse, and successfully remove themselves from a life of substance abuse and addiction. Recovery from drug rehab is a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment. Based on this research, key principles have been identified that should form the basis of any effective treatment program:

* No single treatment is appropriate for all individuals.
* Treatment needs to be readily available.
* Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug addiction.
* An individuals treatment and services plan must be assessed often and modified to meet the persons changing needs.
* Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness.
* Counseling and other behavioral therapies are critical components of virtually all effective treatments for addiction.
* For certain types of disorders, medications are an important element of treatment, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies.
* Addicted or drug rehab individuals with coexisting mental disorders should have both disorders treated in an integrated way.
* Medical management of withdrawal syndrome is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use.
* Treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective.
* Possible drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously.
* Treatment programs should provide assessment for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases, and should provide counseling to help patients modify or change behaviors that place themselves or others at risk of infection.
* As is the case with other chronic, relapsing diseases, recovery from drug rehab can be a long-term process and typically requires multiple episodes of treatment, including “booster” sessions and other forms of continuing care.

Who is the Hero?

Who is the Hero?

In a recent issue of Sky Magazine dedicated to “The Magnitude of Sport”, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jonathan Yardley wrote “There is much to be learned about a culture from those persons whom it places upon pedestals, whom it admires and emulates, whom it calls heroes.”

Professional athletes are powerful role models for American youth. Many authorities have looked to sport programs as a way of reducing juvenile delinquency. Youth sports are deeply rooted in our social and cultural heritage. A recent study estimated that almost half of 34 million American adolescents participated in non-school sports. In terms of attendance at Hockey Jerseys events, corporate sponsorship of athletics, licensed sports product sales, and media coverage on television and radio, the magnitude of sport in our society has never been so dominant and pervasive - and its impact is growing.

NEISS Confirms Protective Equipment

Data from NEISS confirms the efficacy of protective equipment in preventing injuries associated with Sharks Jerseys.32,18 Schieber and associates32 found that of subjects drawn from a national probability sample of those injured while Sharks Apparel, only 7% wore the four recommended articles of protective equipment, 46% wore no protective equipment, 45% wore knee pads, 33% wore wrist guards, and 20% wore helmets. Schieber et al.32 estimated that failure to wear wrist guards increased the possibility of wrist injuries ten-fold, and failure to wear elbow pads increased the risk of elbow injury by a factor of 9.5.

Funding for San Jose Sharks Apparel Arena

Funding for San Jose Sharks Apparel Arena

In 1997 efforts were made to get state money to either renovate the existing NHL Jerseys arena or to construct a new one. Both of these efforts failed. People seeking to secure a team for St. Paul were again faced with disappointment when in May of 1997 it was announced that Raleigh, North Carolina would be the new home for the Whalers. This disappointment was short-lived when on June 25, 1997 the NHL announced its final approval for a new St. Paul Hockey Jerseys franchise. In 1998 the state approved an interest-free loan of $65 million to assist with nearly half the costs related to building a new arena. As allowed by the legislation the team reduced its state loan payment obligation when they negotiated use of the Sharks Jerseys arena with the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission. The city funded its share of the cost predominately through the issuance of sales tax revenue bonds.

Lack of Experience - Can Hurt!

Lack of Experience - Can Hurt!

Most in-line skaters attempt to skate without any previous instruction. Although the skills involved in sports such as ice NHL Jerseys, figure skating, roller skating, skiing and skateboarding are common to Sharks Apparel, many of those injured while San Jose Sharks Jersey either have no previous experience with these compatible sports or have not participated in them recently.2,10 Banas2 reported that two of eight persons were injured in their very first attempt to skate. The database from NEISS25 revealed that 15 of 101 persons were injured on their first or second attempts at skating.

The Secretary of the Treasury is with us, Secretary Paulson; thank you for coming, sir. I appreciate the members of the United States Congress that have joined us, and the United States Senate. You don’t need to do the gator thing. (Laughter.)

The teams here today span 21 different campuses, in 14 different states — from California all the way over to Florida. You represent eight different athletic conferences: the Big Ten to the Pac-10 to the West Coast Conference and to the Ivy League. There’s Tigers and Badgers, Huskers and Anteaters. (Laughter.)
